Earlier this year, Social Security (SSA) updated its regulations on determining disability based on diabetes. This can be a devastating disability in its advanced stages. SSA promised more specific guidance, and issued the new ruling, 14-2p. Essentially, Social Security always looks at a diagnosis, and then even MORE closely at functional impairment. As always, causation is not a factor if a person is disabled. After diagnosis, the focus is on the symptoms, and how functional ability is impacted. The link to the new regulation is here:
