Shutdown’s effect on Social Security offices

Here’s how the government shutdown will affect Social Security:

  • Social Security and disability checks will still go out for the duration of the shutdown.
  • Social Security offices remain open.
  • In contrast to previous shutdowns, no Social Security Administration employees will be placed on furlough and all services will remain open.
  • Hearings will apparently go forward, possibly with reduced support staffing.

Additionally, the shutdown should have little effect on Social Security checks. According to the Social Security Administration’s shutdown contingency plan, most core programs and benefits would continue in the event of a shutdown. All essential services will continue during a shutdown, such as public safety operations and Medicare payments.
